Mars in action

Living our principles in everything we do in over 65 countries around the globe.

Quality

Working with the world’s leading authority on pet care and nutrition, Waltham®, the makers of Cesar® food for small dogs developed a new premium nutrition, premium quality dry food exclusively for small dogs. A team of veterinarians and nutritionists leveraged information gained from over 25 years of small dog research and created a dry food with a unique “H” shape kibble that was designed to be easy to pick up and chew for small dogs’ mouths. Understanding the specific nutritional requirements of small dogs, the Cesar® brand launched its first product range of dry food for small dogs in Canada that incorporated a unique kibble shape, life-stage specific recipes and a unique blend of ingredients.

Responsibility

In Canada, the Pedigree® Brand recognizes that pet ownership is a significant responsibility. In 2008, the makers of Pedigree® took on that responsibility by launching the Pedigree Pet Adoption Drive™ campaign. The campaign aims to raise funds and find loving homes for shelter dogs across Canada. The funds will go towards helping dogs – be that covering vet care, vaccinations, shelter and food for approximately 2000 dogs across the nation. By partnering with 30 shelters across Canada, the Pedigree® Brand is able to provide support for dogs in need.

Mutuality

Present in their locations for over 20 years, our Canadian plants in Bolton, ON and Newmarket, ON have been committed to helping their communities celebrate life. Mars Canada facilities have partnered with local organizations with a purpose to make a positive difference in the communities where we live and operate. In the past, we have supported neighbourhood safety programs, local charitable groups, youth services, and non-profit organizations. Today, our focus is on areas that leverage our company’s leadership in Petcare, Food and Snackfood. Our North American Mars Volunteer Program (MVP) engages our associates to give back to our communities through participation at local animal shelters, community services and food banks.

The Five Principles are an important part of Mars culture not only in Canada, but in Mars around the world. Here are some notable examples from other Mars sites:

Efficiency

When Gilles Barathier, maintenance technician at St Denis de l’Hotel in France, discovered a weakness in our production systems that meant petfoods were not always efficiently distributed into their packaging he didn’t hesitate to come up with an alternative, better, packing solution.

Drawing on past experience as a helicopter mechanic, Barathier quickly developed ‘the vortex’, a production delivery system that solved previous problems of product clogging as well as allowing for faster packing on the production line. His vortex has now been employed in Mars factories around the globe.

Freedom

In 1965 The WALTHAM® Centre for Pet Nutrition was established in the UK to identify the dietary needs, preferences and behavior of pet animals. As a privately owned company, Mars has the freedom to conduct pet research purely for the sake of bettering the life of pets.

Our team has pioneered some of the most important breakthroughs in pet nutrition, and has shared the results of the Centre’s research via more than 1,500 publications, and regular communication with scientific and pet care communities.By developing products that constantly improve nutrition and care, we help the world’s pets to live healthier and happier lives.
