Appreciation, pride and fun is the basis of top score of 96%

Sint-Stevens-Woluwe, 28 February 2012 – At the annual ‘Great Place To Work Awards’ organised by Vlerick Management School, Mars Belgium improved its position and won fourth prize for ‘Best Employees in Belgium’ in the ‘less than 500 employees’ category. No less than 96% of the employees describe Mars Belgium as a great place to work. What is remarkable is that Mars Belgium is one of the few companies in the top 10 that also has a factory in Belgium. Furthermore, the Belgian division of one of the fastest growing food companies obtained exceptionally high scores for pride, appreciation and fun as a precondition for involved and happy employees.

The list of the ‘Best Employers in Belgium’ is drawn up by the Great Place to Work Institute in cooperation with the Vlerick Leuven Ghent Management School. Only companies whose organisation is an example in the field of personnel management are eligible for inclusion in the internationally reputed ranking.

With 97% and 96% respectively, appreciation and fun are crucial for motivated and involved employees
Mars Belgium obtained remarkably high scores for criteria relating to pride, fun and recognition: 95% of employees indicated to be proud of his or her achievements, 96% stated that Mars Belgium is an enjoyable place to work and a staggering 97% believes that there is time and space for celebrating special occasions.

It is no coincidence that Mars Belgium scored highly with regard to fun and recognition. The reason for this is twofold: a unique philosophy and management style where family spirit and the wellbeing of staff in the company come first, and the conscious celebration of personal as well as common successes and achievements, which results in professional appreciation and satisfaction.

‘Happiness’ as a key for current generations
Mars has a value-driven company culture that is guided by Five Principles: quality, responsibility, mutuality, efficiency and freedom. Philippe Henry de Frahan, General Manager of Mars Belgium, added a sixth Principle: fun. A Principle that is crucial for current generations.

Philippe Henry de Frahan explains: “As General Manager I consider it as my personal task to inspire and teach our employees and ensure that we all back a common objective. However, it is also my task to make sure that they are happy in their job. The current generation sets great store by everyday happiness. It is fundamental for a company to take this into account. People who are happy are motivated and actively contribute to the development of the company.”

Concrete actions make a difference
At Mars Belgium, concrete actions stimulate family culture and a sense of entrepreneurship. This ensures that no less than 92% of employees indicate that there is a real family and team spirit at Mars Belgium.
