Principles in Action
We have taken an obligation to achieve environmental stability in a generation (SIG). We have developed Plans to achieve environmental stability (Sustainability Roadmaps) for 2012-2015 for the production areas of our Petcare and Chocolate segments. We also have taken measures to improve the efficiency of our business. The overall use of water at the Russian production site of Mars at Stupino has decreased by 14% since 2007, demonstrating that we are certainly approaching our global target of attaining a 25% reduction in water use by 2015. We have been successful in reducing significantly waste, water use, and energy use at our production site for chewing gum and hard-coated candies in St. Petersburg. In the last two years, the volume of waste reprocessed at this site has doubled, reaching a total of 80%. Optimizing the packaging for chewing gum has assisted this significantly. Innovative solutions developed for cleaning syrup vats and centrifuge equipment have helped reduce water use by 2%, and developing a thermal regeneration system has made it possible to attain a reduction of energy use totaling 16,051 gigajoules.
Our new chocolate plant in the Ulyanovsk Region was designed and built in compliance with the most modern international environmental standards. We use the most advanced cleaning systems and purified reprocessed water for the purpose of minimizing the use of water resources, as well as the most modern and efficient technology, light diode equipment, and lighting equipment to reduce our energy consumption. We have active educational programs directed at increasing environmental awareness of Associates, and we conduct “Green” weeks, Earth Days, and Environmental Days, with the idea of forming inside the company a responsible and solicitous relationship to the environment. Associates participate as volunteers in events to improve environmental conditions on our sites. Our Associates have planted 2,500 trees with the goal of re-establishing pine forests destroyed in the fires of 2010 in the region around our food production plant in Luhovitsy (Moscow Region).
In regions where we conduct operations, we consider it especially important to assist the development of a healthy way of life, particularly among children. We provide schools with sports equipment, set up playgrounds, organize athletic events, conduct competitions and events for children for the purpose of developing in them a responsible relationship to pets.
In the opinion of the Amplua Insights Center for Analysis and Research, in 2011 the Russian division of Mars was in the top three companies that create the conditions for leadership development.
