Mars has become WWF’s partner in Earth Hour

For the first time, Mars Russia became an official partner of World Wildlife Fund (WWF) within their Earth Hour initiative.

On March 25, nine Mars factories in Russia turned off part of their energy utilities, which allowed decreasing energy consumption and CO2 emissions into the atmosphere. As the result the company could determine new ways of further resource saving.

“We are sure that our business plays an important role in making the environment better. It depends on us in what state we will leave our planet for future generations. Earth Hour is a great occasion to think about it and share our best practices with Associates, partners and other people who care” - said Valery Schapov, President of Mars Russia.

The partnership of Mars and World Wildlife Fund includes their joint educational activities. On the day before the initiative the Fund representatives visited Mars office in Moscow in order to hold a lecture on “Change yourself, not the planet. Can humans live in harmony with nature?”.

”Throughout their existence humans have changed the environment more than any other species and we continue to transform our planet daily. It was interesting to discuss with our colleagues what each of us could do in order to decrease the negative influence on Earth and save its biological resources”, - said Dmitry Burenko, Development Director of WWF Russia.

Sustainability, health and wellbeing are the key elements of Mars business all over the world. There are five areas where the company aspires to bring an improvement, that is: land use, greenhouse gas emissions, water resources use, income level and human rights.

In Russia, the refusal of taking industrial waste to landfills has become one of the most important achievements in terms of ecological sustainability. The company finished the process of transition to 100% waste-free production in 2015, which made it one of the pioneers in this sphere.

On the global scale, as compared to 2007, Mars decreased the amount of greenhouse gas emissions by 25%, water consumption – by 16.9% and hydrocarbon fuel consumption - by 18.1%. 89% of packages used by the company allow secondary use or recycling.

Additional attention is devoted to ecological education: currently 1.8 million people all over the world have become students of a special programme launched by Wrigley Company Foundation.
