Among our commitments, we constantly seek to reduce our impact on the environment by treating our waste water and our solid waste, as well as by reducing our carbon footprint. Our plants in Saint-Denis-de-l’Hôtel and Ernolsheim-sur-Bruche, as well as the Wrigley Biesheim factory, are ISO14001 certified, a standard based on the principle of constant improvement of environmental performance.
We also seek to preserve natural resources. For instance, we aim to protect endangered species and are gradually removing endangered or vulnerable fish stocks from our raw materials, selecting instead renewable sources for these species.
Sustainable cacao farming
Mars, Incorporated is committed to buying 100% of its cacao from certified sustainable sources by 2020.
This certification will involve a structural approach to increase yields per acre and improve farmers’ incomes.
Indeed, we want cocoa farming to be sustainable for the welfare of the farmers, their families and communities, as well as for environmental preservation itself.
FSC (Forest Stewardship Council)
In two years, Mars en France modified its print purchasing policy applying to paper, catalogues, packaging, point-of-sale promotion, etc., asking suppliers to provide FSC-certified products. This label guarantees the sustainable management of forest resources. Buying FSC paper is synonymous of responsible forest stewardship. Our approach is guided by our Principles of Responsibility and Mutuality. Wherever possible, we seek to preserve natural resources.
3 R : Reduce - Recycle - Rethink
Before 2015, we will minimise packaging content and material weights by 10%, we will design our packaging to be 100% recyclable or recoverable, by working with materials suppliers and our retail customers we intend to create new products formats and supply chain innovations.
Automotive fleet
Another area of our environmental effort is the car fleet of our sales force. We are working with carmakers and rental companies to include new, greener technologies. Selecting greener cars and training our sales people to "green driving", we reduced the CO2 emitted by our car fleet by 22% in four years.
