"Mutuality" is an inherent principle of our company culture. For us as a family company, this also encompasses supporting the towns and communities where we live and do business in Germany.
"Making a positive contribution to the environment and local community is essential for MARS, and reflects our way of doing business."
Paul Michaels (President Mars, Incorporated)
For many years now we have been making such positive contributions at both our Viersen and Verden sites, shaped by our values – the Five Principles. They form the basis for our decisions and activities and also reflect how we put our social engagement into practice.
Viersen
Mars Petcare Deutschland, Mars Food Deutschland, Mars Drinks Deutschland and also the European Petcare Hub Site are all located in Verden, the city on the River Aller. Mars supports the community with many activities in the areas of culture, youth, humanitarian relief and sports. The Petfood segment of Mars has been supporting numerous initiatives and clubs that are actively dedicated to the cause of human-animal bonds and responsible pet ownership for more than 25 years – either in the form of visits by volunteers and their pets to nursing homes, or in carrying out animal-supported therapy for disabled children. Moreover, we are sponsoring local food charities, the 'Domfestspiele' (seasonal open air theatre) and youth concerts.

Social Responsibility at Wrigley
Wrigley supporting youngsters
One of the primary criteria for the business success of Wrigley, sustained for more than 115 years, is and always has been the company's innovation power. This culture and spirit of innovation is what Wrigley would like to communicate to young people – while also raising awareness in responsibility and motivating individual engagement. In Germany, Wrigley has been a national partner since 2005, and sole sponsor since 2008, of the initiative 'Jugend denkt Zukunft' (future oriented youth), which today is one of the leading school-business projects. 'Jugend denkt Zukunft' is aimed at advocating the creativity, team spirit, joy of exploration and interdisciplinary action of students from grades nine to twelve – irrespective of the type of school. In the course of innovative games lasting five days, the students are given space to develop their own innovative ideas. So far, 12,000 students have participated in 'Jugend denkt Zukunft'. Wrigley has actively committed itself to this project as a "Corporate Citizen" and is thus supporting the innovation culture in Germany.
20 Years in the service of dental prophylaxis
Back in 1989, Wrigley launched the science initiative 'Wrigley Oral Healthcare Program' in Germany. It is designed to promote clinical research and education in caries prophylaxis and has been successfully implemented in numerous projects. The activities range from the scientifically-established Wrigley Prophylaxis Award granted every year to educational and learning programs for dental students. Today, this award benefits over half of the dental faculties in Germany. This is supplemented by close co-operation and joint projects with statutory health insurers and associations, such as 'Deutsche Gesellschaft für Zahnerhaltung' (German Society for Conservative Dentistry).
