DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION

WE VALUE DIFFERENCE

Different perspectives, unique ways of thinking — our Associates are as varied as our products. This is true no matter what your role is or where you are in the organization. And we are working to increase diversity in all our management teams. We’re particularly focused on making sure women are equally represented in management positions.

We recruit and reward Associates based on capability and performance — regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, lifestyle, age, educational background, national origin, religion or physical ability. Each Mars location, everywhere, is free to respond to local needs to create a culturally sensitive workplace for everyone. In doing so, we want every Mars Associate to feel our commitment to showing respect for all and encouraging open collaboration and communication.

MOVING TOWARD GENDER EQUALITY

Women are underrepresented in workplaces around the world, particularly in upper management. At Mars, we are increasing the number of women in our workforce by an average of 1% each year. We also provide mentoring circles for women in the U.S.

PRINCIPLES IN ACTION 2015 SPOTLIGHT: FEMALE MANAGERS TARGET

More than 40 percent of our managers are women. While this figure isn’t yet perfect, we’re proud of where we stand — not least because the industry average is less than 25 percent.

ONGOING TARGET: INCREASE THE PERCENTAGE OF FEMALE MANAGERS WE EMPLOY
PROGRESS: 40 PERCENT OF OUR MANAGERS ARE FEMALE — ON TRACK

The Road Ahead: Working Toward Gender-balanced Teams

Empowering women in the workplace is led by our Global Director of Inclusion and Diversity, Michelle Thomas:

“Diversity includes many dimensions. To make the biggest immediate impact, we have chosen to focus the majority of our diversity work on gender diversity. Our goal is to create gender-balanced teams. In some teams, levels and functions, our teams would benefit my having more females. On other teams and functions, we would benefit by having more males. We are working to integrate this diversity lens into our human resource processes.

Having a diverse talent pool is not just about race, gender or religion. It is about diversity of thought and culture and so much more! At Mars, we believe that a more diverse Associate population will bring more creativity, more innovation, and ultimately more success!” — Michelle Thomas, Global Director of Inclusion and Diversity

At Mars, we value every single Associate — after all, they are what make Mars, Mars. We embrace every opportunity to be more inclusive and diverse and to give everyone the potential to unlock his or her own possibilities. There’s more to come:

  • We’re starting at the top. Thanks to our training on inclusive leadership, our executives are creating an open environment where every Associate — woman or man — can be themselves and develop their skills.
  • We’re recruiting more and more women and making sure they have every opportunity to progress within Mars.
  • Groups, including the Women of Mars Associate Network and Women in Sales Leadership, give women a chance to network and pass on advice.

DEVELOPING LOCAL TALENT

Our success relies on hiring great local people and giving our leaders the freedom to make the best decisions for local business performance, Associates and the communities we work in. This approach works because we are united by The Five Principles, no matter where we are. It also offers our local leaders a high level of accountability.

We have an eye for talent. Whether it’s in Asia, Africa or the USA, we aim to develop both those already in leadership positions and those with potential for the future. Our Asia Leadership Forum, for example, is an exciting development program that brings together the leadership teams of all of our businesses in Asia. Our Accelerated Leadership Program is an intensive and challenging program for high-potential managers, and we run the program to make sure we’re growing local talent.

Mars is actively working to increase the proportion of women in management roles.
