In the interest of sustainability, Rainforest Alliance works to preserve living space for wild animals, protect natural resources, and provide safety and quality of life for farm workers and their families. Concretely, this means that workers are treated with respect, receive fair wages, have access to medical treatment for themselves and their families, and are provided with education.
“For many years now, Mars has place emphasis on responsibility and sustainability in its work,” summarizes Thorsten Krahn, Mars Drinks’ Marketing Director. “Values such as using environmentally friendly manufacturing and production processes play a prominent role.”
Under the name, “Brighter Tomorrow at Origin,” Mars Drinks has launched sustainability initiatives in Malawi and Kenya for compliance with international ecological, economic, and social standards right at the origin of coffee and tea production. There, the ingredients in Flavia’s Malawi garden tea and Kenya coffee are cultivated there exclusively for Mars Drinks. Portions of the proceeds from these products are invested back into social and economic projects in the cultivation areas, such as a clinic, a laboratory, farmer training programs, improved wet mill equipment and cultivation itself. The result: the coffee quality has improved significantly, coffee production has increased more than 300 percent, and farmer income has more than tripled.
