Building Community and Tackling Littered Gum in Shanghai

Communities are built when groups of people with common goals join together to achieve them. At Mars, we value being part of the communities in which we live and work all over the world, and recognize our mutual responsibility to improve them. Recently, we joined hands with the Shanghai government to address one problem facing the city’s community: littered gum.

In partnership with the Shanghai government, we launched a volunteer campaign “Anti-Littering for Greener and Cleaner Community.” On June 3, leading officials from the government and guests from Wrigley China attended a kick-off ceremony, followed by 5,000 volunteers working across six districts. Volunteer activities spanned from encouraging residents to make “responsible disposal” commitments through the “Bin-it-IN” online platform, to distributing over 55,000 “portable disposal bags.” Shanghai’s Office of Spiritual Civilization Committee initiated games and quizzes throughout the day to keep the community engaged and informed.

“It is exciting to partner with Wrigley China, who brings creative ideas and practical tools into our annual volunteer activity. Our joint efforts will be a strong force to improve community environment in Shanghai,” said Mr. Pan Min, Director of Shanghai Spiritual Civilization Office.

The campaign joins together a community of people working towards the same goal – building cleaner and greener communities in Shanghai neighborhoods with a special focus on reducing littering and gum disposal education. While there is still much work to be done, Mars is proud to continue working with the community on this important mission.
