Mars Partners with Field to Market to Find Sustainable Solutions

05/16/2017

Sustainability has, and always will be, incredibly important to our company. We know we have a significant global footprint – and it’s our duty to make sure we’re using our resources responsibly. And we know we can’t do this alone.

At Mars, a key component of our sustainability efforts is working in partnership with experts, farmers and community groups to address the sustainability challenges that exist and find better solutions. Relationships like this will help us now and well into the future, and ensure we’re always thinking two, or even 10, steps ahead

One of the organizations we’re thrilled to work with in sustainability is Field to Market: The Alliance for Sustainable Agriculture – an alliance of over 120 organizations including the American Peanut Council, Environmental Defense Fund, USA Rice and Walmart. These grower organizations; agribusinesses; food, beverage, restaurant and retail companies; conservation groups; universities; and public sector partners are all working in tandem to help define, measure and advance the sustainability of row crops in the United States. Field to Market uses a methodology rich in data to inform continuous improvement opportunities at the farm level, engaging the most important player in the agriculture industry, the farmer.  We know that farmers play a critical role in advancing sustainability, and Mars believes Field to Market’s science-based approach is a valuable tool to guide the right conversations.

The Alliance brings together experts from across the agriculture industry, helping us leverage their knowledge and learn from their successes and failures when it comes to their supply chain and sustainability efforts. This partnership – across Mars Chocolate and Mars Petcare – helps us stay on the cutting edge, and work together with powerful organizations to have a major impact on the world.

These partnerships are designed to be mutually beneficial, with Mars sharing our knowledge and expertise as well. We’re constantly working to find ways to ensure our products are sustainable and responsibly sourced. That means we have the opportunity, through our membership in Field to Market, to drive conversation and meaningful change across multiple raw materials that are critical to our business – from the peanut farms of Georgia to the corn fields of the Midwest.

For example, when it comes to the sustainability of our two biggest chocolate brands, Snickers and M&M’s, one key ingredient comes to mind: peanuts. Mars Chocolate believes the peanut industry already has a good story to tell on sustainability, but is keen to ensure it becomes a great one. We are proud to support the American Peanut Council’s collaboration with Field to Market, as the entire peanut industry is working together to obtain even better sustainability data of peanut production. Through these efforts, the peanut industry, and most importantly the farmer, will be able to demonstrate progress and drive continuous improvement at the farm level. Mars is an active advocate in the American Peanut Council’s Sustainability Task Force and will utilize our own Field to Market membership to collaborate and help ensure success of the industry’s efforts.

Likewise, Mars Petcare is evaluating and exploring opportunities to develop a Fieldprint Project through Field to Market on grains in the Midwestern region of the United States, with an emphasis on environmental impacts that are material to our business, such as land and water use. As our membership with Field to Market evolves over the months and years to come, we will continue to seek out more exciting opportunities to partner on our other key raw materials.

We are proud to operate, with great partnerships like Field to Market, in a way that provides a win-win for all those who play a role in our supply chain. Our products, and the ingredients they’re made of, are the heart of our business – and we want to make sure we source and produce them responsibly.
