Celebrate World Chocolate Day’s Real Hero: The Cocoa Bean

07/08/2016

World Chocolate Day on July 7 marked the anniversary of the creation of chocolate more than 400 years ago. At Mars, chocolate is part of our history, and it’s one of our favorite treats. There are many myths and misconceptions about the health benefits behind chocolate – the fact is that the benefits of chocolate are locked inside the cocoa bean itself!

To celebrate one of our favorite confections, we’re sharing fun facts about the bean behind the bar:

  1. Cocoa Beans Contain the Real Good Stuff

Cocoa beans contain natural compounds called cocoa flavanols, which contain a unique blend of plant-based nutrients. These potent bioactives have been shown to support health by helping maintain the body’s pool of nitric oxide, which works with your body’s miles of blood vessels to help maintain the healthy flow of oxygen and nutrient-rich blood to all parts of your body.

  2. Processing Cocoa Beans Can Destroy the Health Benefits

Cocoa bean processing traditionally involves fermenting, drying and roasting. However, this conventional process often destroys those oh-so-important cocoa flavanols. Gentle handling and processing of cocoa beans is critical to preserving the powerful health benefits cocoa flavanols can bring.

  3. Cocoa Beans Must Be Handled with Care

As a leader in cocoa research, the scientists at Mars, Incorporated developed and perfected the patented Cocoapro® process. Our team takes the freshest-quality cocoa beans available and gently preserves the cocoa flavanols in their purest form. Thanks to the Cocoapro® process, CocoaVia® has the highest concentration of cocoa flavonoids available in a cocoa supplement today.

  4. There is a Way to Enjoy All the Benefits of Chocolate Without the Guilt

CocoaVia® daily cocoa extract supplement delivers 375 mg of cocoa flavanols per serving – a level that that promotes healthy blood flow from head-to-toe. To put this number in perspective, you would have to eat four dark chocolate bars just to consume the same amount of cocoa flavanols found in one serving of CocoaVia®. That’s a lot of chocolate.

At Mars, every day is World Chocolate Day, and we encourage you to join in on the fun. Follow us on Twitter @MarsGlobal for more fun facts!
