Mars Research Review Board (MRRB)

In all of our scientific research involving humans and animals, we have a responsibility to adhere to the highest scientific and ethical standards. The Mars Research Review Board (MRRB) guides our work with humans and animals, ensuring that it strictly adheres to our policies on research involving human participants and animals.

The Mars Research Review Board is made up of senior leaders at Mars:

  • General Counsel Global Food Law
  • Head of Ethics & Welfare, WALTHAM, Mars Petcare

In addition to our senior Mars leaders, our external MRRB Advisors - preeminent scientists, veterinarians and leaders in their fields - provide sound, independent advice in ensuring we fully comply with our policies. Our external Advisors are:

  • Jeffrey Kahn PhD, MPH

    Jeffrey Kahn is the Director of the John Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics and a Professor in the Department of Health Policy and Management of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

  • James Serpell PhD
  • James Serpell is Professor of Ethics and Animal Welfare and the Director of the Center for the Interaction of Animals and Society at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine.

  • Elizabeth Gard, DVM, DACLAM

    Elizabeth Gard is a practicing veterinarian and a former consultant for the Office for Laboratory Animal Welfare.

  • Peggy McCardle, PhD, MPH
  • Peggy McCardle is a former Branch Chief at the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), US National Institutes of Health, and is now affiliated with Haskins Laboratories, New Haven CT as well as president of her own LLC.
