MARS SUSTAINABILITY PLAN
At Mars, we care about making the world a better place — from our Sustainable in a Generation campaign to our innovative agricultural research — because it just makes sense. We strive to be mutual and promise to do business in ways that are good for Mars, good for people and good for the planet. To make sure we get there, we use the best people and science to plan and measure our initiatives, working hard to solve problems together every step of the way.
We need to protect the earth so that there are fewer impacts for the people that live on it. To do so, we focus our efforts using the “Planetary Boundaries” analysis, which lays out nine environmental impacts that could potentially lead to profound and irreversible damage to our planet. With the Planetary Boundaries as our guide, we use internal information and public, accepted data to figure out the three broad areas in which we can make the biggest difference. A set of nine planetary limits — within which humanity can continue and thrive for future generations — was developed by a group of 28 scientists from across the world that gathered at Stockholm University in 2009.
ASSESSING OUR IMPACT
The first step toward changing the world tomorrow is understanding our impact today. Through partnership and collaboration with universities, policy thought-leaders and NGOs, we’ve taken a close look to identify which of our major supply chains and methods of sourcing raw materials have the biggest social and environmental impact — from African cocoa to Malaysian palm oil to Brazilian beef.
With both scientific and experiential data in hand, we set about doing a better job at looking out for the environment and the communities where we operate. We devised and published new policies on the sustainability of our raw materials that helped us put better processes in place and measure our progress along the way.
Over time, we’ve made solid progress in how we source palm oil, paper and pulp, beef, soy, rice, mint, fish, tea, coffee and other raw materials. And we’re always looking for new ways to improve.
TAKING STEPS TO REDUCE OUR IMPACT
Beyond environmental sustainability, we look around the world for issues we could help address. By figuring out what’s relevant to our business and where we can have the biggest impact, we develop initiatives, standards and best-practice measurements. We recognize that we live in a dynamic world and the relevance of each issue may shift, so we review our goals regularly.
