Human companion animal bond
There are lots of positive aspects to owning a pet.

Mars Petcare, through The Waltham Centre for Pet Nutrition, has long since been recognised as one of the leaders in the field of Human Companion Animal Bond research. Scientific evidence is increasingly showing that pets are good for people. UK and international research demonstrates that interaction with pets can:

  • Reduce the number of visits made to the GP
  • Improve chances of survival after life-threatening illness
  • Reduce blood pressure and perceived levels of stress
  • Provide companionship and enhance social interactions Provide purpose and fulfilment and enrich the quality of life for elderly, lonely and depressed people
Perform a vital role in the family unit regarding child development
  • Promote positive responses from those who are withdrawn, aggressive or mentally ill
  • Prevent re-offending in juvenile prisoners
  • Positively affect school attendance rates

Living in harmony with pets

In recent years, pets have played an increasingly important role in the society. Pets are no longer merely the objects of care and affection given by human beings. They are now seen as companion animals with which people can share their lives. At Mars, we not only support the wellbeing of companion animals through our quality products, but also help to foster the human-companion animal bond. Enhancing the happiness of pet owners and enriching society are our responsibility and our pleasure as a leading company operating in the pet care and pet food sectors.

In line with this philosophy, Mars is undertaking numerous activities around the globe under the theme of "Living in harmony with pets" to support the relationship between people and companion animals. In Japan, "The Companion Animal Information and Research Center" was established in 1997, where we carry out research and surveys in order to make proposals about human-animal relationships. We also promote activities such as building social infrastructure that enables people to live in harmony with their pets and we give financial support to young researchers. In 2000, Mars became a supporting member of the International Association of Human-Animal Interaction Organizations (IAHAIO) and has actively contributed to the development of a wide variety of studies and research projects.
