SALES MANAGEMENT PROGRAMME

You’ll be the main point of contact between Mars and retail or wholesale businesses across the UK. You’ll be helping our customers grow their sales through a variety of channels and you’ll be making a real ‘bottom-line’ difference to their businesses and ours. That’s what life’s like on the SMP. And if you want to develop great leadership skills and commercial flair, but through a customer lens, this could be the programme for you. With placements across our various customer development functions in Mars, we’ll help you find the right one to match your development needs and help prepare you to become one of our future leaders. You may not have thought about a career in Sales, but it’s a great place to develop your commercial acumen, with varied roles right at the heart of the business. It’s not about door-to-door selling, at Mars we develop mutual sustainable relationships with customers of all shapes and sizes and develop great commercial talent. In this part of the business you touch many areas of our organisation and so as a graduate in customer development with us, you’re setting yourself on an exciting career path.

What will I be doing?
Our Sales Management Programme lasts three years and comprises of three placements. You’ll learn how to develop mutual, sustainable customer relationships that grow our business. There are a wide selection of potential roles on this scheme but they are all focused on delivering top and bottom line growth through great selling, negotiation and customer partnerships. Of course, you’ll still develop your broader management skills too and there is a significant focus on your personal, as well as functional development. This is an exciting and varied scheme, so there is no standard path. Placements exist in many different areas of our customer development team – from customer management to our central teams. You could be responsible for growing sales as a Customer Development Executive on your own geographical area, or perhaps managing multiple customers with full accountability, or even supporting our biggest national accounts such as Tesco or Co-op. Or you could find yourself in Customer Marketing, able to partner with our Marketing teams to translate our huge Marketing plans into fabulous in-store activities, tailored to our customers’ needs. Or maybe your skills are suited to Category Leadership, where you could be responsible for driving total category sales using world-class insights to develop range and display recommendations for your specific customers.

What support can I expect?

Your structured three-year programme will start with four weeks on our world class training courses to give you all the grounding you need to have the very best start to your career. Following this there are a range of further training courses available for your development. This training is supported by regular six-monthly reviews to check your progress, discuss your career direction and plan your ideal next placements based your development. In addition to all this you will receive an invitation to 6 development days over the 3 years to support your personal development and you’ll have ongoing support from two senior sales mentors and a recent graduate who’s been there and done it before.

Where will I be working?
You will have a home site near London, Nottingham. Our roles – like our customers – are nationally based, so your placements could be based anywhere in the UK and you will need to be geographically flexible.

What is the starting salary?
The starting salary £32,000 plus a £2,000 joining bonus.

When are pay increases and bonuses?
Individual performance-related pay increases are made at the end of each placement. If you are placed in a field-based role you will also be given a company car to use.

What is the criteria?
Min 2:1 degree in any discipline. If you're a graduate and you've been working in a relevant role for a couple of years, we'd be more than happy to accept your application. You must have a full and valid UK driving license to be able to apply for this scheme. You must have held your license for at least 1 year before starting the programme.
