A Better World For Pets

COMMUNITY OUTREACH TO CONNECT PEOPLE AND PETS

We spend a lot of time thinking about pets around the world. Mars Associates always want to give back to the animals who give us so much — that’s why we spend thousands of hours every year participating in initiatives and best practices that make a real and lasting difference in the lives of millions of people and their pets.

Through our programs, we are committed to:

  • Helping pets find loving homes by supporting national animal welfare initiatives, youth education and local shelters.

  • Providing pet food for pets in need.

  • Establishing new and renovating existing pet-friendly places to encourage the bond between humans and pets. Take a look at our Keep Australia Pet Friendly campaign here.

PETRESCUE PARTNERSHIP

Mars Petcare Australia has partnered with PetRescue since 2007 though its flagship brand PEDIGREE® and the PEDIGREE® Adoption Drive. Pet Rescue’s website is the most visited charity website in Australia and the best way for foster carers to advertise their pets for adoption. Pet Rescue’s goal is to help 200,000 pets find forever homes every year and end pet homelessness and pound killing.

Since 2017, the partnership has been deepened to include three strategies:

Annual $1mill food donation - Helping to feed Australia’s rescue pets in need

By working with PetRescue and PETstock, we’ve created a national food donation program that delivers millions of dollar’s worth of free pet food to rescue pets across the country.

Each year we donate thousands of tonnes of pet food, and together with our partners, we work tirelessly to manage the logistics of such a massive operation - ensuring these truckloads of pet food are delivered to the right place at the right time for hundreds of rescue groups, shelters and pounds across Australia. What’s more, the money that participating rescue groups and shelters save through our innovative pet food donation program helps them cover the cost of vital vet care and other essentials as they continue to save the lives of Australia’s homeless pets.

Matched Associate Giving

Mars Associates have the opportunity to sign up and make a single or ongoing weekly donation to Pet Rescue. PetRescue direct this funding to where it’s needed most - assisting their members with urgent rescue cases and life-saving projects.

Automatically donated from our pay each week, over 12% of Mars Associates have joined the program, smashing the national average of 5% sign up for workplace giving. Our Associates know that just $2.50 a week can help save a pet’s life. Added to this, Mars Petcare Australia has pledged to match Associate donations, to total $100,000 for Pet Rescue.

1000 Hours Skilled Volunteering program- 1,000 hours of free professional services for rescue groups.

This ambitious program aims to match and connect skilled volunteers from Mars Petcare with our rescue members to deliver 1,000 hours (and thousands of dollars worth) of free professional services - from IT and finance to HR, though to admin and marketing.

Through our partnership with PEDIGREE®, Mars Associates have had a long history of involvement with PetRescue, and as individuals, Associates were actively seeking ways they could personally help rescue pets. Understanding that our professional skills and experience would be of huge and lasting value to our member rescue groups - more so than walking dogs and cleaning litter trays - we’re developing the Skilled Volunteering program.

Associates who choose to volunteer their time and skills will be matched with a rescue group who requires assistance in their particular field of expertise to resolve a problem or meet a challenge. Whenever possible, PetRescue will be sharing the lessons learned and results so that all PetRescue members can benefit.

FOOD BANK AUSTRALIA PARTNERSHIP

Foodbank is the largest hunger relief organisation in Australia. Mars Petcare is proud to partner with Foodbank to help support communities and families in need.

In 2017 alone, Mars Petcare Australia donated more than 200,000 kilograms of product to help vulnerable Australians and their beloved pets during tough times. Our contributions to Foodbank resulted in a $4,876, 147 social return on investment, which in turn helped Foodbank reach a total of $850million social return on investment.

Mars Associates can also volunteer at Foodbank distribution centres.

LOCAL FOOD DONATION PROGRAM

Mars Petcare is proud to be a family owned business who puts regional communities at the heart of everything we do. Associates are proud to continue to support the community and to help Make a Better World for Pets.

At our local manufacturing sites (Wodonga, Victoria and Bathurst, New South Wales), our Associates work to coordinate, facilitate and track pet food donations to local rescue groups. In 2017 we donated over $35,000 worth of product to local shelters and rescue groups, ensuring support for the vital work they do and helping support the animals in their care looking for their forever homes.

MARS ASSOCIATES VOLUNTEERING PROGRAM (MVP)

Our Mars Volunteering Program is a worldwide initiative that unleashes our greatest assets – our Associates – to make a difference in our sourcing and operating communities.

Every Mars Associate qualifies for 16 hours of paid time off to participate in Mars Volunteering Program (MVP) events.

At Mars Petcare Australia, our Associates identify and participate in initiatives which help Make a Better World for Pets and their owners. In 2017 50 Associates from all functions of our Wodonga business volunteered and upgraded a local dog park to make it safer for off leash dogs. Between them we donated over 350 hours to the upgrade project completing tasks such as landscaping, agility equipment installation and removal of old fencing.

Through MVP, we are making a difference all over the world! In 2016 more than 23,000 Associates from 282 sites around the world participated in Mars MVP activities, donating over 100,000 hours of time, reaching over 130,000 people and more than 100,000 pets.

When we put our Principles into Action, we not only do it within our Associates and work sites, we do it within our communities as well.
