Wrigley launches environmental literacy program for schoolchildren

Wrigley (Mars, Incorporated) announces the launch of its “Clean City Starts With You” program to promote environmental literacy among school children. Ecological lessons will be run at schools of Stupino, Ulyanovsk, Sochi and St. Petersburg.

As part of the Mars’ global Sustainable in a Generation plan, this initiative is designed to raise awareness among young people about proper litter disposal and teach them to take more care and responsibility for keeping their cities beautiful and clean.

“We see this initiative as an opportunity to contribute to developing a positive environmental culture and fostering a loving and caring attitude to the nature and the urban environment. Behavior patterns develop in the early school years, and it is in our power to influence them by role modeling the right attitude and sharing our knowledge,” said Elizaveta Aleksandrova, Corporate Affairs Director at Mars.

Designed for elementary school children, the program comprising four environment-focused sessions was developed together with Russian experts in education and ecology. Through play and interactive activities, children will learn about urban pollution issues and practical steps to cut down on waste. The sessions will be run by volunteers with the participation of teachers and high school students, while parents will be able to talk with their children about the environment using the materials from the program website

The program was piloted in Saint Petersburg at 11 comprehensive schools in May 2017 and showed great potential. The initiative was highly appreciated by its participants and the Saint Petersburg International Business Association – it was awarded the Best Environmental Volunteer Project in the environmental project competition in 2016.
