Advancing Diversity & Inclusion at Mars, Incorporated: For Second Year in a Row Mars Earns 90 Percent Score in 2018 Corporate Equality Index

The strength of our company depends on the varied backgrounds, unique personalities and combined talents of our Associates. We have a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion at Mars, as those aspects are what allow people who come from diverse backgrounds to perform at their highest potential and collaborate effectively at work.

For the second year in a row, we are pleased to announce that we have received a score of 90% on the 2018 Corporate Equality Index (CEI), a national benchmarking survey and report on corporate policies and practices relating to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) workplace equality, administered by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation. This score reflects our commitment to supporting LGBTQ workplace equality and fostering a culture where all backgrounds and stories are welcome. From scoring 60%, in 2015 we’ve looked at how to improve, and have been scored 90% two years running – and we look forward to progressing even further in 2018.

“At Mars, our priority is ensuring that each and every one of our 100,000+ Associates can be themselves at work,” said Michelle Thomas, Mars Global Inclusion & Diversity Leader. “The diversity of perspectives and backgrounds that our Associates bring are the reasons for our rich culture. Without that, we wouldn't be the company we are today. We're proud of a 90% Corporate Equality Index Rating, and we won't be satisfied until we reach 100.”

The 2018 CEI rated 947 businesses in the report, and evaluated LGBTQ-related policies and practices including non-discrimination workplace protections, domestic partner benefits, transgender-inclusive health care benefits, competency programs and public engagement with the LGBTQ community. This year, we focused on our Transgender benefits across Mars, ensuring that our “Inclusive Leadership” program was spread throughout the business. We also engaged with the LGBTQ community by participating in both the NYC Pride and London Pride marches. Our efforts in satisfying the CEI’s criteria resulted in a 90% ranking.

This score rounds off our year of making improvements to advance workplace diversity and inclusion. Most recently, we placed fourth on the Top 25 Best Multinational Workplaces list by Great Place to Work ®, the global authority on high-trust, high-performance workplace cultures.

We will continue our efforts in advancing workplace equality with the hope of receiving a 100% ranking for the years to come. Our Associates are always encouraged to bring their individual experiences to the table and we are grateful to them for creating the open-minded culture that contribute to our achievement of such positive ratings.
