MARS WRIGLEY CONFECTIONERY U.K. INSPIRES STUDENTS TO PURSUE STEM CAREERS

Here’s an eye-opener: the majority of today’s school-aged kids will one day hold jobs that don’t currently exist. For a generation that’ll never know a technology-free childhood, it’s no surprise careers of the future will be heavily based in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).

You might not think of Mars as a STEM-focused company, but you’d be wrong. Innovation and technology are critical to the way we do business. That’s why Mars Wrigley Confectionery U.K. is encouraging and inspiring our next generation of Associates by showcasing our STEM careers.

Partnering with Learning to Work, a youth employment organization, we recently held an interactive workshop to introduce students to the world of STEM in fun and interactive ways, while encouraging teamwork, communication and problem solving.

Students from several local schools joined forces to build and program robots using LEGO® MINDSTORMS. Their remarkable robots could follow complex commands and even participated in a race.

Chris Shaw, our Training and Education Lead, said the students were engaged, enthusiastic and full of challenging questions.

“It was a wonderful testament to the future talent pipeline we hope to see at Mars. These community events are a great way to get more young people to interact with the working world and better understand opportunities in their future.”

Organizers at Learning to Work think the students certainly took the message to heart.

“The more young people interact with the working world, the more their confidence grows when it comes to making decisions about their future,” said Nancy Lalor, Operations Director.

And that works well for us, because we know investing in innovation will help us attract the best and brightest in the business, for generations to come.
