Mars Shares Scientific Research and Engagement Policies

As a family-owned, global petcare, confectionery and food business, scientific research is often the starting point to ensure our products are safe and of the highest quality. As a global business we believe that we have a responsibility to help address critical challenges society shares, such as food security, sustainable agriculture and global health. One way we do this is by engaging in collaborative research with leading organizations, governments and scientists around the world. We’re publishing our Policy on Scientific Research and Engagement today because we want to communicate and share the standards that govern the scientific research and engagement we are involved in.

It’s vital that companies like ours have research policies in place that meet widely accepted scientific standards. We’ve had a science policy for many years, but this is the first time that we have published it. We hope that this step will help raise the bar for industry involvement in scientific research and will support an open and collaborative approach.

Much of our research underpins the quality and safety of Mars products, as well as our efforts to address broader societal challenges. For example:

  • the work we have done for over 50 years at the WALTHAM Centre for Pet Nutrition to advance the nutrition and health of pets;
  • our research to neutralize aflatoxins – a food toxin that affect billions of people around the world;
  • all the data and information from the African Orphan Crops Consortium, which aims to improve the nutritional content and resilience of the 101 most important crops in Africa, and will be freely available in the public domain to help smallholder farmers who really need it;
  • and 20 years of research into cocoa flavanols – a compound that has been shown to improve the performance of the cardiovascular system.

At Mars, we’re committed to scientific research that enables us to keep tackling grand challenges head on and to create new products and services that people and pets around the world can enjoy every day.
