Associates show their Principles in Action in our latest annual report

At the very core of who we are and how we behave as a business are The Five Principles of Quality, Responsibility, Mutuality, Efficiency and Freedom. We don’t just talk about these Principles; we live by them each and every day.

That’s because our more than 85,000 Associates around the world commit to keeping these Principles alive and growing our business in ways we can truly be proud of, rather than focusing on growth at any cost. In 2016, our Associates contributed more than 100,000 volunteer hours – a personal best – thanks to our ten years strong Mars Volunteer Program and Mars Ambassador Program, which give Associates a chance to grow, while giving back. Our collective efforts made, and will continue to make, a lasting and positive impact on 130,000 people and 100,000 pets.

An example of this can be found in a heartwarming story from our Petcare business. When floods ravaged Louisiana and West Virginia, Banfield and the Banfield Foundation served as first responders for impacted pets. Through 700 Associate volunteer hours and a Banfield Foundation-funded rescue vehicle, 5,000 dogs and cats received free care in the aftermath of these disasters. Shelters in need benefited from 20 tons of pet food from Mars Petcare; and Acadiana Animal Aid in Louisiana received a $10,000 disaster relief grant from the Banfield Foundation.

The release of our annual Principles in Action summary is both a celebration of efforts like this and a reminder of where we need to go further as we work toward our goals for the future.

In a Q&A with our CEO and Office of the President to mark the launch of our latest report, Grant F. Reid said: “Putting The Five Principles into action is a day in, day out effort that has been going on for five generations. As Mars Associates, each of us are stewards of this legacy and we take pleasure in doing it well. This past year we’ve achieved some great things that make us proud and deserve to be celebrated. These successes also encourage us when we face particularly difficult challenges, or fall short of our own hopes and ambitions.”

In addition to highlighting the progress we are making across our entire business – from creating a more diverse workplace, to making better products with clearer labels, and improving our supply chain, we also monitor our progress with respect to the environment.

As our Chief Sustainability and Health & Wellbeing Officer, Barry Parkin, states within the report: “We’ve always believed that in order for our business to thrive and endure for generations to come, those that we work with – from the farmers at the start of the our supply chain, through suppliers, Associates, customers, consumers, and ultimately the planet – must thrive as well.”

In our 2016 report, we were proud to show that we:

  • Reduced our GHG reduction by nearly 30% compared to 2007
  • Continued to source 100% of our black tea, coffee and palm oil from certified sources
  • Mapped 70% of our priority raw material supply chains to origin
