Promoting Oral Healthcare Through Community Engagement

Each of one our businesses and brands is dedicated to Nourishing Wellbeing in its own way. Over the past several years, Wrigley has used its expert knowledge to promote oral care in a number of ways.

Wrigley Oral Healthcare Initiatives

Wrigley Oral Healthcare Initiatives is a global initiative supporting charities worldwide to help protect children’s oral health through improved access to oral care and better oral health education. Wrigley Oral Healthcare Initiatives was inspired by two pilot initiatives:

  1. Chew For Change: Since 2013, Wrigley Sweden has been partnering with SOS Children’s Villages to reduce the incidence of tooth decay and improve quality of life for children in Ghana. Every purchase of Extra® gum generates a donation to the program, which is teaching children to brush their teeth for two minutes twice a day by providing hands-on oral care training, educational posters, toothbrushes and toothpaste. Since 2013, more than 60,000 children in Ghana have benefitted from the program. In 2015, it was extended to also cover Botswana where an additional 16,000 children have been reached.
  2. Protect Kids’ Smiles: Since 2013, Wrigley Poland has been partnering with the Polish Red Cross and Polish Dental Association to raise awareness about the issue of dental cavities and to promote better oral care habits. Each September and October, Wrigley donates 1 percent of all Orbit® gum sales to fund educational sessions and dental check-ups for children in Poland. And after every check-up, each child receives an oral care toolkit, containing a toothbrush, toothpaste, sugar-free gum and a letter to parents about how they can help. Since 2013, Wrigley Poland has provided oral care education for 250,000 children and dental check-ups to 25,000 children.

Oral Care & Education

Did you know that tooth decay is the most common chronic disease in the world? An almost entirely preventable disease, it affects 60 – 90% of school children and nearly all adults worldwide.

No matter who you are or where you come from, a smile can change a life. That’s why the Wrigley Company Foundation is working to improve access to oral care and better oral health education through global programs and initiatives.

Since 2010, we’ve provided care to more than 100,000 people through the Oral Care Community Service Grant Program in partnership with national dental associations. The program, which is supported by the Wrigley Company Foundation, empowers dental professionals to provide oral health services and critical dental treatments to underserved children and adults in their local communities.

And, we’re committed to spreading smiles around the world. The program first launched in the U.S. and grew to include Australia, New Zealand and Ireland. In 2016, we were happy to announce expansion into two additional countries – Russia and Germany.

Wrigley Oral Healthcare Program

The Wrigley Oral Healthcare Program (WOHP) partners with dental professionals worldwide, contributing to their patients’ oral health through one additional simple and enjoyable step in their daily routine: chewing sugar-free gum after eating and drinking while on the go.

For more than 25 years, WOHP has supported clinical research into the oral care benefits of chewing gum — including saliva stimulation, plaque acid neutralization and tooth strengthening — to help dental professionals and their patients understand the role of sugar-free gum in their daily oral hygiene routine, in addition to brushing.

The FDI World Dental Federation and nearly 20 national dental associations around the world recognize the oral care benefits of chewing sugar-free gum (after eating and drinking) together with their daily oral hygiene routine.

Wrigley is committed to advancing oral health education and better access to oral care. That’s why we support the FDI on World Oral Health Day (each year in March), as well as Vision 2020, a global health advocacy platform, which aims to raise the political profile of oral health among public-health officials and other decision-makers around the globe.
