A SUSTAINABLE APPROACH TO OUR OPERATIONS

Our Operations

DRIVING TOWARD OUR SUSTAINABILITY GOALS

Mars is working hard to become more sustainable. We started this journey almost 10 years ago with operations-focused targets, and in 2017 launched our expanded Sustainable in a Generation Plan, covering our full value chain. The foundation of our approach is to reduce our impact on the environment in line with what science says is necessary to keep the planet healthy. Read more about how we understand and prioritize the impacts of our business.

Our Sustainable in a Generation Plan goals are meant to be a challenge: by setting aspirational goals, every step forward brings real, positive impacts to our business, people and the planet. Our operational goals are no exception.

And we’re making progress! For instance, we’re reducing our carbon footprint by using renewable energy. Through our wind farm partnerships, we source the equivalent wind power needed to produce all the M&M’S® sold globally. To celebrate this, and raise awareness of the benefits, we leveraged the reach of M&M’S® (one of our largest brands) to rally consumers around renewable energy. Through our Fans of Wind campaign, which launched in the U.S. last fall, we shared with more than 99 million people how we can all join the clean-energy revolution.

WHERE WE AIM TO BE

As part of our 2017 Sustainable in a Generation Plan, we’ve set science-based targets covering our full value chain.  Even before that, we’d been working hard on making our own operations more sustainable. We have operational targets to:

  • Reach net zero greenhouse gas emissions from our own operations by 2040
  • Reduce our operation’s energy intensity by 10% between 2015 and 2020
  • Reduce water intensity in our operations in water-stressed areas by 15% between 2015 and 2020
  • Maintain our 2015 achievement of sending zero operational waste to landfill through 2020.

HOW WE’RE GETTING THERE

Our Sustainable in a Generation goals help us design, build and manage our operations with an eye toward a more sustainable future. We are implementing four broad strategies to help meet our targets. Some will make an impact today, and some will plant the seeds for even greater gains tomorrow. We’re working on:

  • Operational efficiency: Decreasing energy use, water use and waste through changes in practices and behavior.
  • Capital efficiency: Investing in more efficient equipment and processes.
  • New technology: Developing and deploying innovations that change the way we do things.
  • Renewable energy: Working with partners to generate cleaner power, including being a founding member of the RE100 — a collaborate, global initiative uniting more than 100 influential businesses committed to 100% renewable electricity.

OUR SUSTAINABLE IN A GENERATION APPROACH

TEAM EFFORT AT WRIGLEY REDUCES ABSOLUTE ENERGY USE

We want to be absolutely sustainable. Our Associates at Wrigley have proven it possible time and time again, cutting energy use as production volumes have risen — showing that absolute reductions are indeed possible.

ASSOCIATES DRIVE SIG PROGRESS AT MARS FOOD BOLTON

Associates Craig Heffernan and Peter Low at Mars Food in Bolton, Canada, have saved the equivalent of the energy needed to power 85 homes for a year — and enough water to sustain 65 families.

SIG WORKSHOPS ROLL OUT WORLDWIDE

Sustainable in a Generation workshops around the world are inspiring Mars Chocolate Associates to identify new energy-, water- and waste-saving opportunities.

VIERSEN TAKES LEAD IN DRIVE TOWARD SUSTAINABILITY GOALS

Associates in Viersen, Germany, have gone above and beyond to become Sustainable in a Generation. As a part of the Mars Chocolate network, it has made great progress and is on track for all of the Sustainable in a Generation goals. It has been landfill-free since 2009, and having implemented successful strategies to improve energy and water efficiency.

MEASURING OUR SUCCESSES

We track sustainability metrics at each of our 130+ factory sites. Our Associates play a critical part in deploying improvements at the factory level, and help to identify how to leverage investments towards reaching our sustainability goals.

Our commitment to more sustainable operations runs deep. We are proud that Mars Associates on our cross-segment Sustainable in a Generation team make it a priority to implement our sustainability strategies and go out of their way to improve performance of our operations. Our Sustainable in a Generation team is responsible for:

  • Assessing facilities’ efficiency performance and opportunities for improvement
  • Sharing results and best practices across segments and facilities
  • Prioritizing technical developments towards more sustainable practices
