Creating Better Moments: A Fresh Look at Mint

Mars Wrigley is dedicated to creating better moments that make people smile around the world. We’re not just committed to our consumers, we’re also focused on positively impacting the planet and its population. Across the Mars Inc. portfolio, we help to provide livelihoods for over 1 million farmers worldwide, and we believe everyone working within our extended supply chains should earn sufficient income to maintain a decent standard of living. When we launched our Sustainable in a Generation Plan in 2016, we committed our global business to unlock systemic changes that benefit people and the planet, with ‘Thriving People’ being one of the core pillars of the plan.

We source our mint from farms in the United States, Canada and India, and with our global initiative AdvanceMint (known as Shubh Mint in India) we’ve taken action to advance plant science and invest in mint farmers and their local communities. Through our partnership with Tanager, we’re providing farmers with access to research, sharing our industry expertise, offering practical guidance on soil testing and fertilizer management as well as reducing water consumption. 

By 2021, we’ll train more than 20,000 smallholder farmers on innovative agricultural practices in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. By 2025 we aim to improve productivity, reduce water consumption by 30% and improve the smallholder farmer’s incomes. 

And the Mars Wrigley Foundation helps build better communities too. By the end of 2019, over 900,000 children in 1,700 mint-farming villages in India have been provided with greater opportunities for future success through the Foundation’s partnership with Pratham. With our action today, we help build the foundation of a better future for the farmers of the region. 

In the U.S. and Canada, Mars Wrigley sources mint indirectly from more than 300 farms and uses the mint oil from peppermint and spearmint in 65% of our mints and gum. We’ve developed a program with universities and colleges in mint-growing states to teach students to sustainable farming practices. We believe this will help us create a deeper connection between our farmers and our consumers, so we all can enjoy this important crop, and the products that use it, for years to come.
