Bringing Hope to Coral Reefs

In 2021, cat food brand SHEBA® announced their involvement in the world’s largest coral reef restoration program. SHEBA® has committed to restoring 185,000 square meters of coral reefs — the equivalent of 148 Olympic Swimming pools — by 2029. The work being done at Hope Reef, Indonesia, is the latest step in Mars’s 13 years of work on coral restoration.

Using locally sourced materials, more than 285,000 coral fragments have been planted and 19,000 reef stars have been installed, spelling out the word “HOPE” to demonstrate how hope can grow. In just three years, coral cover has increased from 5% to 55%. Fish numbers have risen, and the reefs have seen the return of other species like sharks and turtles.

SHEBA® has committed to a 10-year investment in coral reef restoration, in both Hope Reef and other sites around the world.

More Sustainable Fish Sourcing

Mars Petcare began a partnership with World Wildlife Fund (WWF) in 2010. We set an ambitious goal that 100% of the fish we use come from sustainable sources.

Now, 81% of fish sourced across Mars Petcare comes from more sustainable sources according to our guidelines, and we do not source any endangered species. We recently renewed our global partnership with WWF until 2025 to help us continue on this journey.
