Embracing Paper Packaging

In 2021, Mars Wrigley Germany piloted a chocolate bar in paper-based packaging for the first time, together with our German retail partner EDEKA Minden-Hannover. As part of this pilot, more than 90% of the packaging in over 900,000 Balisto bars was changed to paper-based packaging. Through this test, we reduced our use of plastic packaging by around 440 kilograms.

The project was launched to show how well paper performs as a material in production and assembly in the factory, during transport and on the shelf. The lessons learned will feed into future packaging designs for the Mars chocolate bar portfolio.

This launch marks a significant milestone in just one of the many projects bringing Mars closer to our goal to make all of our packaging reusable, recyclable and compostable, and to reduce our use of virgin plastic by 25%.
