Mars ranked as one of the best places to work in the UK

Today, for the third year running, Mars UK has been named in the Great Place to Work® UK annual rankings in the Large Company Category. We are now ranked 8th, climbing two places from last year’s ranking of 10th.

We’re very proud that Mars continues to be recognised as one of the UK’s best places to work. As one of the largest family-owned businesses in the world, Mars has been operating in the UK for more than 100 years. We employ over 4,000 Associates including 52 Apprentices across 12 sites - 8 of which are factories, and that’s not to mention the over 100 dogs that come into our Petcare offices.

Our Associates work together in a mutual and supportive environment based on honest and open communication, enjoying unique levels of freedom and responsibility in the business; which contributes to Mars’ collaborative culture. As a private company, we have the freedom to invest for the future, whether it be in our people, our products or in the future of our business.

In 2017, Mars Inc. launched our Sustainable in a Generation plan which pledged to invest $1billion over the next few years to tackle urgent threats to our business and society including climate change, poverty and resource scarcity. Did you know that all of our 12 UK sites are powered by renewable energy and that we’ve made sustainable sourcing commitments on our key raw materials – from cocoa, mint and tea to fish, rice and coffee?

Mars is not just family owned, it has a family feel. We even have a 5th generation Associate - Danielle - working at our Slough site. Danielle is the latest member of her family to work at Mars since it was first founded in the 1930s – and there are many more examples of this!

We also offer our Associates some unique benefits; such as bringing your dog to work at our pet-friendly sites. And who better to be our primary chocolate taste-testers than our Associates in Slough?! In our Mars Food business - which makes famous brands like Uncle Ben’s - Associates are given the opportunity to work with local schools to educate young people on nutrition and the importance of healthy eating. In 2017, as part of the Ben’s Beginners Programme, Mars Associates worked with over 300 local school children – and this isn’t the only work in the community we do. In 2017, Mars Associates gave over 6,800 hours of volunteering and raised over £93,975 for local communities. Through our volunteer programme, Associates don’t only benefit personally from working with local communities, but it also aids professional development. Associates who volunteer are encouraged to build their participation into their development plan, providing another means to develop various competency areas, or to gain experience which may aid with career progression.

Mutuality is one of Mars’ core business principles and we recognise that gender equality is of mutual benefit to both our Associates and to our business. We’re proud that our gender pay gap is significantly lower than the national average.  However, we know there is still more work to do to create a gender-balanced workforce and unlock opportunities for women across our business. We’re specifically looking at women's representation in roles where they've historically been underrepresented, for example in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics). Leaning into potential barriers, mentoring high-potential women, and ensuring that all interview panels include women are just a few of the steps that we’re taking.

Our goal as a business is to continually improve and it is no different with our Great Place to Work® ranking. Ultimately, we are proud of this ranking but not complacent - We want to continue to be a business people want to join, stay and grow with.
