USING EXCESS PACKAGING TO CREATE MUTUAL BENEFITS IN MEXICO

ACCESSORIES MADE FROM MARS PACKAGING

Doing more with less is a creative process. We do our best to efficiently package all of our products, and we take every opportunity to reuse or donate leftover materials. In Mexico, our packaging is finding a surprising second life.

Instead of having excess packaging go to the landfill, we send it to the nonprofit organization Mitz, which uses traditional techniques to weave bags and accessories from what’s been left behind. Sold in M&M’S WORLD® stores and online, these beautiful products provide artisans with a steady source of income, a portion of which they donate to provide education to children in Palo Solo, Mexico City.

To date, the Mars-Mitz partnership has sold more than 1,480 bags and other products made from excess packaging from M&M’S® Brand, TWIX® Brand and other products.

Many people are pitching in. In 2011, Ivan Valencia from Mars Food in Canada spent six weeks at Mitz in Mexico through our Mars Ambassador Program.

In Mexico, artisans have found a way to utilize Mars packaging scraps to create and sell traditional-style accessories.
