Improving Lives for One Million People

We believe that the global economy – and global businesses like ours – need to do much more to ensure that work empowers people. Whoever they are and wherever they live, when people thrive, they are more productive and better able to meet their own needs as well as the needs of their families and communities.

We believe we can, and should, play a role in increasing opportunity for people in the workplaces and communities that we touch.

Our Thriving People ambition is to meaningfully improve the lives of one million people in our value chain to enable them to thrive.

At Mars, this is how we’re fostering Thriving People

Millions of people around the world work hard every day producing and selling our products. Every one of them deserves the opportunity to thrive. Today, however, millions of people live in poverty or are vulnerable to exploitation. That is why we are focused on increasing income, respecting human rights and unlocking opportunities for women.

Increasing Income

Our goal is for everyone working within our extended supply chains to earn a sufficient income to maintain  a decent standard of living. Although our relationship with smallholder farmers is rarely direct, we recognize their importance for our business. We’re especially focused on helping the current generation of smallholder farmers to prosper, while also ensuring that the next generation is motivated to stay connected to farming as a profession that allows them to thrive.

Respecting Human Rights

Our ambition is to improve working lives. From factory workers in Chicago to farmers in Cote D’Ivoire, our goal is for everyone touched by our business to be treated with fairness, dignity and respect. We’re taking action first on the issues that are most serious and where people are most vulnerable.

Unlocking Opportunities for Women

Women provide two-thirds of the world's working hours, produce half of the world's food, but they earn only 10% of the world's income and own less than one percent of the world's property. Our goal is to unlock opportunities for women in our workplaces, marketplaces and supply chains.
