How pronouns can create inclusion
In the world we want tomorrow, society is inclusive. As a company, we firmly believe all our Associates should feel free to be who they are and should be treated equally regardless of their gender identity or expression. We’re giving Associates the option to add pronouns to email signatures in a safe an inclusive way, for those in countries where it is legal / common practice. This is one of many methods we can adopt to help normalize discussions about gender and create an inclusive work environment for all Associates.
We also believe that pronouns matter. Using someone’s proper pronouns makes a difference in the mental health and well-being of everyone, particularly those who may identify differently than assigned at birth.
What are gender pronouns?
Gender pronouns are the terms people use when referring to someone in the third person. Like their name, gender pronouns affirm part of a person’s identity. It is just as important to get a person’s pronouns correct as it is to call them by the correct name. Using She/Her, He/Him, They/Them are ways of affirming identity.
Why have we added this option for Associates to include pronouns in email signatures?
It is increasingly common to see the addition of pronouns in email signatures and we believe that adding them has the practical benefit of making clear how you would like to be referred. While also being inclusive, it creates a sense of safety for the recipient as it demonstrates that you will respect their gender identity and choice of pronouns.
Why is Mars doing this?
Mars operates across a rich variety of cultures and languages, including pronouns in our email signatures helps to clearly signal how we wish to be referred to when names are unfamiliar (due to language or culture, for example) or gender ambiguous.
Adding pronouns is totally optional
Adding pronouns to signatures will only be possible for Associates based in countries/legal environments where it is legal and common practice. If Associates are in a country where they get the opportunity to add pronouns to email signatures it will still be optional to do so. You can include them in any language.
