With increasing demand for specialty and emergency veterinary care, BluePearl estimates three times the amount of pet blood donations will be needed in 2025.
That’s why BluePearl relies on the invaluable contributions of dog and cat donors to help save and enhance fellow pets’ quality of life. When pet owner volunteers their healthy dogs or cats as blood donors, each donation can save the lives of up to three other pets.
“We are in critical need of increased pet blood donations in the veterinary industry,” said Meghan Respess, DVM, DACVECC, director of blood banking at BluePearl. “If you have a pet that meets our eligibility requirements, we’d love to see you at one of the BluePearl Blood Banks across the country. Your pet will be treated like the hero they are, with plenty of love and treats, while positively impacting the lives of other pets.”
Like humans, pets require lifesaving blood transfusions when undergoing surgeries or suffering from trauma, auto-immune disease, or other illnesses—and BluePearl has implemented industry-leading requirements for pets to donate blood, prioritizing patient safety throughout the process. By the end of 2026, BluePearl aims to source 50% of the blood products used in its hospitals from the BluePearl Blood Bank.
The BluePearl Blood Bank is a voluntary, community-based program with no costs associated for participating pets. In addition to providing the gift of life to other pets in need, additional benefits for pets include:
- Complimentary initial pre-screening and annual lab work every year a pet participates in the blood donor program
- Complimentary physical exam by a licensed veterinarian to ensure a clean bill of health at every donation
