Marine Marvel: How our Associate Taoufiq Errafi is turning microalgae into a sustainable superfood for pets
Did you know that substituting fish oil with microalgae can help us reduce our environmental impact?
We depend on responsibly managed fish supply chains because we use these nutritious ingredients in our pet food brands. But many fish species face threats from multiple angles, like unsustainable fishing practices and fluctuating stock health due to climate change.
Our Sustainable in a Generation Plan focuses on helping shape a future with a healthier planet, thriving people and pets and a more inclusive society. That’s why we’re exploring projects to identify new and innovative ingredients – such as microalgae – that could help reduce our climate impact and help protect vulnerable ecosystems all while providing nutritious food for pets.
How are we doing, overall? We have a goal to cut carbon emissions by half by 2030 and be Net Zero by 2050. With all of our net zero work across Mars, by the end of 2023, we reduced absolute GHG emissions by 16% across our value chain since 2015 while growing our business more than 60%.
Now, meet Taoufiq Errafi, who spearheads innovative ingredient solutions at Royal Canin, one of the biggest brands at Mars.
With over two decades at Mars, Taoufiq has been a pivotal figure in steering our product lines toward sustainability. His journey began with a passion for making a positive environmental impact, fueled by personal experiences and a commitment to future generations.
Let’s dive right into our conversation!
Q: Taoufiq, could you share what motivates you in your role at Mars?
Taoufiq: It's about making a tangible difference. Knowing that my efforts contribute directly to our environmental goals keeps me motivated every day. From improving production processes to pioneering new materials, my role is to ensure that our products are as sustainable as they are effective.
Seeing our ideas come to life and knowing they contribute to a healthier planet is incredibly rewarding.
Q: What does sustainability mean to you personally?
Taoufiq: Sustainability isn’t just a professional commitment; it's a personal one. I've witnessed the direct impact of unsustainable practices, and I'm driven to develop solutions that ensure a healthier planet for future generations.
Q: What are some of the innovative approaches you’ve implemented in your role?
Taoufiq: One of our growing breakthroughs has been developing some Royal Canin products substituting fish oil with microalgae – this innovation provides a direct source of EPA and DHA omega-3 fatty acids, which are important ingredients in nutritious pet food. Beginning to use microalgae gives us an opportunity to reduce our environmental footprint through land-based cultivation that doesn’t deplete marine resources.
Q: What are the challenges you face, and how do you overcome them?
Taoufiq: The challenges are substantial, from technological hurdles to scaling up sustainable practices. But with the support of Mars leadership and collaboration with forward-thinking partners, we are overcoming these obstacles by setting clear targets and leveraging innovative technologies. And by integrating sustainable practices into our operations, we’re setting a precedent for the industry and making strides toward our net zero goals.
Q: What do you find most satisfying about your job?
Taoufiq: Seeing our ideas come to life and knowing they contribute to a healthier planet is incredibly rewarding. And I remain optimistic about the future, knowing that even the smallest steps can lead to monumental changes in preserving our environment. Every action counts.
Doing our part to keep our planet healthy is absolutely non-negotiable. Taoufiq’s dedication and leadership in our sustainability efforts highlight our commitment to a healthier planet. His innovative strategies have already saved a billion fish this year alone at Royal Canin, showcasing our commitment to a healthier planet.
