Award-winning work: Ron Osborn’s lifetime contribution to package safety

The Mars R&D Award is our signature, global program recognizing outstanding contributions that have delivered business impact. With more than 500 nominations, we’re introducing you to our final 12 recipients across four award categories.

Ron OsbornRon Osborn is the Principal Scientist at Mars Wrigley and has been shying away from the spotlight since he started at Wrigley in 2001. He knew he was nominated for a lifetime contribution award this year, but he never thought he’d hear his name announced as the recipient. Ron has quietly dedicated his career to food contact evaluation and packing materials — ensuring all packaging at Mars Wrigley is safe and compliant — and his fellow Associates wanted to see his hard work honored.

“Ron has had a profound impact on Food Contact Material safety and compliance programs, both internally and externally across his career,” says Chris Rowe, Global Vice President of R&D at Mars Wrigley. “His unwavering dedication for establishing global Product Quality Management and Food Contact Materials standards exemplifies the Mars commitment to the safety and wellbeing of our consumers contributing to our Purpose — Better Moments Make the World Smile.”

Ron is one of only three R&D Associates to be honored with an annual Lifetime Contribution award – recognizing each Associate’s unique contributions in his or her respective areas. Ron’s passion for package safety punctuates his 20 years with Mars Wrigley.

Co-workers say he has been an incredible teacher, coach, mentor and role model to many Associates across segments and across industries. His mentorship to so many has not only made other Associates feel heard and seen but has stretched our commitment to food safety across segments and markets.

When asked what this award means to him, Ron says it means more than we’ll ever know.

“This award was such a surprise. I know several Associates who were nominated, and I know the work they’ve done – I have a great deal of respect for their contributions, making my nomination even more humbling. My job is to quietly work behind the scenes to make sure things go smoothly. I really am touched that my work is noticed and appreciated.”

Ron’s favorite part of the job? Keeping people safe.

“It’s important our packaging is of the same quality as our products. Working with a team who’s dedicated to that is incredible in and of itself. Our program raised the bar for our supply base; it’s made us even better at what we do.

“I also often speak at trade shows, and I include a slide with a photo of my grandkids. I tell people that if I wouldn’t let my family eat out of it, I wouldn’t let our customers eat out of it. I have a really personal connection to what I do, and I like knowing I make a difference.”
