Local Pet Parents Are Thankful Firefighters Will Train With These Sets

As a large global organization, we are grateful that our 130,000+ Associates around the world give us an opportunity to take meaningful, positive steps that make a difference in small and large ways. Whether it’s in the office or out in local communities, so many of our Associates are taking action toward a better world tomorrow. Janika Hübner’s story is a great example of that.

Janika, who is a pet nutrition management assistant for Mars Petcare, has also been volunteering at her local fire department in Verden, Germany since 1999. A philanthropic activity that was inspired by witnessing the heroic efforts of firefighters over 30 years ago when her parents’ roof caught fire.

After years of volunteer service, Janika noticed an increase in pets that needed to be rescued. She had the idea to work with Mars to sponsor pet rescue sets as well as training on how to use them in operations. The sets comprise a first-aid set for pets, with blankets and bowls, 2-3 breathing masks, and an oxygen bottle and allow firefighters to share their breathing air with a pet that is being rescued, saving time and more pet lives. These sets aren’t standard equipment for the fire department, but thanks to Janika’s efforts, they are in Verden – as Mars is now the sponsor of pet rescue sets for the fire brigade in this region, which is comprised of eight departments with over 450 members.

“The local pet parents are thankful that the firefighters will train with these sets,” said Janika. “For the local firefighters, it is not usual to have this high standard equipment to make their job as good as possible.”

At Mars, we truly believe pets make the world a better place. That’s why we’re inspired to create A Better World For Pets™, a world where they’re healthy, happy and welcome. Our 85,000 Petcare Associates around the world spend their days (and occasionally nights!) thinking about the 400 million pets of the world and how to improve their lives.

Hearing stories like Janika’s makes us proud to be a company that is driven by purpose and powered by our most valuable asset: our Associates.
